Ancient methods of long-distance communication included a chain of mountaintop fires signaling Troy's fall in Greece, and Native Americans in the Americas using smoke signals.  These smoke signals employed a code; specific smoke patterns conveyed different messages.  For instance, two parallel smoke columns signified a victorious war party's return.
