Blood glucose regulation is a key point in the functioning of the body, considering that the biological half-life of glucose is about 40 minutes and the total circulating free glucose reserve for an adult is 10-20 g. Glycemic homeostasis is the result of a balance between the amount of glucose entering the blood and the glucose leaving the extracellular space.
Various hormonal and metabolic factors participate in achieving this balance. The sources of glucose in the blood are: dietary carbohydrates, liver glycogen reserves and gluconeogenesis from non-carbohydrate substances such as: alpha-amino acids, glycerol, lactic acid. Under physiological conditions, the only way to utilize blood glucose is by using it at cellular level via an anabolic/catabolic pathway.
Glucose control factors operate both by changing the rate of blood glucose influx and by regulating its tissue utilization.
The main hormones that ensure glucose homeostasis are:
• - glucagon
• - insulin
Blood glucose dosing has long been based on the reducing properties of this aldohexose, namely the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. In addition to glucose, there are other substances with reducing properties, for this reason the blood glucose values obtained by this method are approx. 10-20 mg/dL higher than the results obtained by the enzyme method.
