From a theoretical perspective, this study identified a significant impact of early trust on mobile payment uptake by users. Although early trust has received much attention in the context of online shopping, such as e-shopping (Gefenet al. 2008), it has been little studied in the context of mobile shopping, especially in the context of mobile payments, which involve high uncertainty and risk. Facilitating the use of mobile payments thus requires early trust. On the other hand, existing studies mainly used information technology adoption theories to investigate mobile phone user behavior. Factors such as perceived usefulness and compatibility have been found to influence the adoption of mobile payments. We found that, in addition to perceived usefulness, intention to use is also significantly influenced by primary trust. This enriches existing findings and improves our understanding of mobile payment user behavior. The results show that perceived security, perceived ease of use and perceived generality influence users' early trust in mobile payments. These factors are mainly related to the characteristics of the payment system. As noted earlier, there are several factors that can influence early trust, such as propensity to trust, reputation, and institutional trust mechanisms. Future research could examine their effects on early trust.
From a management perspective, our results suggest that mobile phone providers should not only provide positive benefits to users, but also increase users' early trust to facilitate their adoption and use of mobile payments. We observed that perceived security has a strong influence on early trust. Cell phone providers can take measures such as encryption, certification, and third-party assurance mechanisms to improve users' perceived security and mitigate perceived risks. The results also show that perceived ease of use and perceived presence significantly affect early trust. Mobile phone providers need to optimize the work process and provide users with an easy-to-use interface. They can also implement training to equip users with relevant information, improving their perceived ease of use. In addition, they should improve the reliability and responsiveness of payment systems and enable users to make ubiquitous payments.
