2)Substitution – Replace it with something safer
How it reduces risk: The hazard still exists but is far less dangerous.
Example: Use a non-flammable solvent instead of a flammable one.
3)Engineering Controls – Physically isolate people from the hazard
How it reduces risk: Workers can’t come into contact with the hazard even though it’s still present.
Example: Machine guards block access to moving parts.
4)Administrative Controls – Change work practices
How it reduces risk: Reduces how long or how often workers are exposed.
Example: Rotate workers so each person spends less time in noisy areas.
5)PPE (last line of defense)
How it reduces risk: Doesn’t remove the hazard—only minimizes harm if exposure happens.
Example: Gloves protect skin from chemicals, but the chemical is still there.
