The story of Santiago, a fisherman who faced hardships alone in his humble boat, against a huge marlin. This fisherman had been lived in a small village on the Cuban coast. who had gone about 84 days without catching a fish, earning him the nickname "Salau”. So, he was conspicuously unlucky fisherman. Each time was setting out to sea, returned empty-handed. Resulting some of fishermen treated him badly. There was a yong boy named Manolin who was pupil to the unlucky old man. He was loyal to him, but his parents forced him to leave him and fish alone believing that without the old man, his boat will be more prosperous.

The boy was still continuing to care for the old man upon his return every night. He was always helping the old man for his needs and providing him food and clothes etc. He usually discusses with him about the latest developments in American baseball, especially the trials of the old man’s hero, Joe DiMaggio. Santiago was confident that his unproductive streak will soon come to an end.
On the 85day, he sets out alone into the Gulf Stream determined to catch a big fish. After along struggle, he hooks a giant marlin, which pulls his small boat far out to sea. The old man was unable to tie the line fast to the boat due to fear that the fish would snap a taut line. Therefore, the old man bears the strain of the line with his shoulders, back, and hands, and he is ready to give slack should the marlin make a run. For three days, and nights, it steadily northwest until at lest it tires and swims east with the current. The entire time, Santiago endures constant pain from the fishing line. Wherever the fish lunges, leaps, or makes a dash for freedom, the cord cuts him badly. Although wounded and weary, the old man feels a deep empathy and admiration for the marlin.
Eventually, Santiago manages to harpoon the marlin and ties it alongside his boat. While Santiago is excited by the price that the marlin will bring at market, he is more concerned that the people who will eat the fish are unworthy of its greatness. As Santiago sails on with the fish, the marlin’s blood leaves a trail in the water and attracts sharks. The first to attack is a great mako shark, which Santiago manages to slay with the harpoon. Although he kills several sharks, more and more appear, and by the time night falls, Santiago’s continued fight against the scavengers is useless. They devour the marlin’s precious meat, leaving only skeleton, head, and tail. Santiago chastises himself for going “out too far,” and for sacrificing his great and worthy opponent. He arrives home before day- break, stumbles back to his shack, and sleeps very deeply.
