By definition, an EO must be obtained from “botanically defined plant raw material by steam distillation, dry distillation, or a suitable mechanical process without heating” [16]. Lavender EO has a complex mixture of VOCs with distinct aroma/odour characteristics and the source is strictly limited to the species L. angostifolia, which makes lavender EO a unique and valuable product.
Most often, the VOCs of lavender EO are determined by conventional Gas Chromatography coupled with a flame ionisation detector or a mass spectrometer (GC-FID/MS). Several VOCs of lavender EO were well identified in these studies, however, there were also huge variations in VOCs composition among the diverse genetic, environmental and post-processing factors [15]. In addition, there are limited studies on the fast GC-MS/MS application to EO research including lavender EO [3], [17]. Moreover, the VOCs composition of lavender EO in some cases are probably the EO of its closest species and it can be difficult to differentiate between authentic lavender EO and that of its closest species with a single analytical method. Some other supplementary analytical methods are required, and the GC-IRMS could be the one. Few studies researching the EO of plants such as thyme, savoury and oregano [18], lemon balm [19], [20], mandarin [21], bergamot [22], Damask rose [23] and lavender [24], [25] have used the GC-IRMS method either alone or in combination with conventional GC-MS methods. However, only a few compounds were usually considered (e.g., linalool and linalyl acetate in lavender
EO).
Extending the stable isotope ratio analysis to a larger number of volatile compounds may be more effective in checking for false declarations of lavender EOs. For this purpose, the GC-IRMS and GC- MS/MS methods validation is necessary to demonstrate data reliability. This paper aims to develop and validate robust analytical methods for the characterization of volatile organic compounds in lavender or similar species EO and for the determination of their compound-specific stable isotope ratios of carbon and hydrogen.
