On the other hand, in the real world, Walter Mitty is an old man busy doing chores for his nagging wife. She constantly nags him about buying galoshes, putting on his gloves, and driving more slowly."Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?"

Throughout the analysis of the story, we can observe that Walter Mitty remains static from the beginning to the end, as defined in "F.Y.B.A. OPTIONAL ENGLISH" by Dr. Rajan Welukar, Dhaneshwar as "a flat character [who] does not grow with the development of the plot." The short story reveals the true personality of Walter Mitty as one of a dreamy character who chooses to escape from reality and immerse himself in daydreams as the main hero in all his adventures. His dreams are woven around five themes. Four of them revolve around personal courage, achievement, and adulation. In the first, he is the captain of a ship navigating through icebergs; in the second, a surgeon who repairs a machine with a fountain pen and subsequently saves the life of a millionaire banker; the third involves an expert witness and accomplished marksman, and in the fourth, he is an ace military pilot. Only in the fifth does Thurber deviate from the theme of courage, accomplishment, and adulation.

James Thurber shows the reader the potential outcome of living in an imaginative world: some may find an escape in it, while for others, it can lead to destruction. Mental health holds great significance for each individual, and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" provides readers with the experience of observing and being part of the rich world of a mentally unbalanced person, offering a unique opportunity to understand human psychology.

On the other hand, in the real world, Walter Mitty is an old man busy doing chores for his nagging wife. She constantly nags him about buying galoshes, putting on his gloves, and driving more slowly. At the end of the story, when she questions why he didn't put on his overshoes before leaving the store, he responds with irritation: "I was thinking,” said Walter Mitty. “Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?"

In reality, Mitty is actually incompetent, and his wife is trying to help him and keep him from getting lost in society; he frequently forgets and is completely unaware of his actions.
