For example, when I say something like "If I were you I would buy that," I am posing a situation that is contrary to fact because I am not you. This use ofthe subjunctive employs a form that appears to be past tense but in fact has nothing to do with past time.

Examples: I wish I were in Italy.

Betty looks as if she were exhausted.

If he were really my friend, he would get me a ticket.

Sometimes the subjunctive is replaced by other forms or structures.

Examples: It is necessary for her to go at once.

It is necessary that she should go at once.

If he was really my friend, he would get me a ticket. (informal usage)

I wish I was in Italy. (informal usage)
