means the law between nations. Before that, it was referred to as the law of
nations (droit des gens), a term derived from the Latin term (jus gentium) that
the Romans used for the law governing their relations with other peoples. In the
present era, the term "public international law" (droit international public) is
used with an open "d" (public international law) to distinguish it from private
international law (droit international privé) (private international law), which is
the correct term, meaning the law of the persons of the international
community, specifically the law of states only.
