Different Ways to Travel

Sister: I was just going through some old photos I found in this album in the closet. It showed our grandparents coming over to this country on a boat. Imagine having to sail across the sea to get here from their old country.

Brother: Really? That doesn’t seem like that long ago, but travel has really come a long way since then. Nowadays if someone is going over the ocean, they’ll just fly. An airplane is much faster than a boat can ever be.

Sister: Traveling that far on a boat would give me such a sense of discovery. I would feel like Marco Polo sailing around the world or something.

Brother: You can discover whatever you want a lot quicker by just flying there. All you would see on a boat is water everywhere. Maybe if it was in the right context I could enjoy it, like if we were on one of those famous wooden ships that they used to use a couple centuries ago. I would probably just get seasick, though.

Sister: I think they stopped making wooden ships because of how ineffective they are. Metal is much more effective for keeping out water. I would still be scared that the boat would just sink.

Brother: I prefer just driving to wherever I need to go, anyway. You can’t go to your daily job by taking a boat or a plane. You can’t really travel in those during bad weather, either. Planes can’t fly in a storm, and boats could sink.

Sister: Well, lucky for us, we have additional ways to travel compared to how our grandparents used to get around. Although, they couldn’t have gotten here by just taking a car. They haven’t invented cars that can drive over water yet!

Brother: Until then, I’m probably going to stick to driving around our own country. There’s plenty to see here, anyway.

Sister: I don’t really like heights, so flying isn’t the best option for me. I hate the long lines at airports, too. I guess we’ll just have to travel around here and try to be as adventurous as our grandparents were when they came to a new country.

Brother: I’m not sure we’ll be quite that bold, but we could still travel together. I think tomorrow afternoon I’ll go through the closet some more and see if there are any other old pictures to check out.

Sister: Not without me, you won’t!
