Weigh out between 1.2 g of potassium hydrogen phthalate crystals in a tared
100-mL beaker. Record the mass to 2 decimal places. Use the spatula to transfer the crystals from the bottle to the 100-mL beaker. Take the beaker off the balance before you do this. If you spill any of the crystals on the lab bench, CLEAN them up!
Record the mass of KHCH401 on the Data Sheet.
Add about 50 mL of distilled water to the beaker using the mark on the side of the beaker. Stir carefully with a glass rod until all the solid has dissolved.
Transfer the solution to a 100-mL volumetric flask using a funnel and glass rod.
Rinse the beaker three times with small amounts of distilled water and add these rinses to the volumetric flask. This is called a quantitative transfer.
Now add distilled water up to the 100-mL mark of the volumetric flask. The last few drops must be added using a dropper. IF YOU ADD TOO MUCH WATER YOU MUST START ALL OVER AGAIN.
Seal the flask with a stopper. Turn the flask upside down several times to mix the solution, while holding the stopper in with your thumb.
Dilution of Sodium Hydroxide Solution
Transfer 10.00 mL of the stock solution of sodium hydroxide into a 100-mL volumetric flask and add distilled water up to the calibration mark.
Label this solution "dilute NaOH solution".
Titration
Place the dilute NaOH solution in the burette and titrate a 10.00 mL aliquot of potassium hydrogen phthalate with it. Do this in the same manner as in Practical 5.
Perform the titration as many times as necessary until at least three "volumes added" agree to within 0.10 mL (higher precision than 0.10 mL is better)
Circle the values of the "Volumes added" that agree to within 0.10 mL. Take an average of these values.
Clean all used glassware (including the burette) first with tap water, then with distilled water.
