IN
'N the course of my practice as a consulting engineer to
architects, I have noticed that similar questions are
repeatedly asked regarding industrial buildings. This
experience confirms my impression that hitherto very little
practical information on this class of work has been published.
A treatise explaining and illustrating modern principles and
practice in the design and construction of industrial buildings
has therefore a valuable function to perform, especially at a time
when professional and business men are anxiously preparing for
a period of unparalleled commercial and industrial expansion,
in which factory building must play an important part.
"National efficiency " is clearly recognised as a condition of
vital consequence to the Empire ; and it is my aim to show how
to build efficient factories. With_that_ object I endeavour to
supply all essential information, and to show, by means of typical
plans and a representative collection of photographic views, the
most recent developments in the design and construction of
up-to-date industrial buildings.
I have not attempted an elaborate treatise on the subject, but
have preferred to summarise the general principles involved in it,
supplementing this general survey with information on various
matters of detail which I have determined in my own practice.
