The impacts of ocean acidification are already being seen in marine ecosystems around the world. Coral reefs, which provide habitat for a quarter of all marine species, are particularly vulnerable to ocean acidification. The more acidic water makes it harder for corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons, leading to weaker and more brittle coral structures. This not only affects the corals themselves, but also the countless species that rely on them for food and shelter.

Shellfish, such as oysters, clams, and mussels, are also at risk from ocean acidification. The more acidic water makes it harder for these animals to build their calcium carbonate shells, leading to thinner and weaker shells that are more susceptible to damage and predation.

Fish populations are also at risk from ocean acidification. Studies have shown that some fish species may experience changes in behavior, growth rates, and reproductive success in more acidic waters. This could have serious implications for fisheries around the world that rely on these fish for food and livelihoods.

In addition to the direct impacts on marine life, ocean acidification can also have indirect effects on human communities that depend on the oceans for food and income. For example, coastal communities that rely on shellfish farming or fishing may see declines in their harvests due to the impacts of ocean acidification on shellfish populations.

Overall, ocean acidification is a serious threat to marine ecosystems and the millions of people around the world who depend on them for food and livelihoods. It is crucial that we take action to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions and protect our oceans for future generations.
