The Earth’s climate has changed throughout history. About 10,000 years ago, Earth came out of an Ice Age. Since then, global climate and temperature have remained relatively stable. But during the last 150 years, humans have added large amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, mainly through the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas. This sends additional heat toward the Earth, causing climate change. Greenhouse gases also come from sources like deforestation and raising livestock. Since the Industrial Revolution, the human population has grown rapidly, more and more land has been cleared for agriculture, and industrial activity has increased, all of which have contributed to climate change. Because of population growth and increasing consumption of fossil fuels, emissions of greenhouse gases have been rising steadily for decades. Most of the warming that has occurred over the past 50 years was caused by human activities. Climate change is happening now. Over the last century, the average surface temperature of the Earth has increased by about 1.0 degrees Fahrenheit (0.6 of a degree Celsius). The 10 warmest years in the 20th century all occurred after 1980, and the 5 warmest years all occurred after 1994. Since the late 1800s, Arctic temperatures have climbed more than 4 degrees Fahrenheit (2.2 degrees Celsius). Some scientists estimate that average global temperatures could rise by 3 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (1.7 to 5.5 degrees Celsius) over the next century if greenhouse gases continue to rise. Climate change is already having an impact on the environment. The oceans are expanding and becoming warmer, coral reefs are dying, and sheets of ice in the Arctic and Antarctica are melting. The amount of snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased about 10 percent since the late 1960s, and mountain glaciers have receded worldwide. These changes, in turn, are affecting plants and animals. As climate changes, species are becoming extinct. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that between 20 and 30 percent of species evaluated so far may be at risk of going extinct as a result of climate change. In the Arctic, climate change is causing the loss of sea ice, which is vital for many animals, including polar bears. As a result, polar bears are struggling to find food. In Africa, the African elephant population is declining because of changes in rainfall patterns and temperature. Climate change is also affecting human health and well-being. Heat waves are becoming more common, and this can lead to illness and death, especially among the elderly and the very young. Climate change can also lead to more extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and floods, which can cause injury, illness, and death. In addition, climate change can affect the availability of food and water, leading to malnutrition and disease. In response to climate change, the world needs to come together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This can be done by increasing energy efficiency, switching to renewable energy sources, and reducing deforestation and other land-use changes. We also need to take steps to adapt to the impacts of climate change that are already happening. This includes building sea walls to protect against rising sea levels, developing drought-resistant crops, and creating early warning systems for extreme weather events. Finally, we need to work together to help those who are most vulnerable to climate change, including the elderly, the very young, and those living in poverty.
