In sample 1, the hydrometer readings showed a sand percentage of 65.5%, which is higher than the silt percentage of 34.5%. We also noticed the absence of clay, so based on the rules of soil texture, we classify the soil from the first sample as sandy clay. As for sample 2, the silt percentage was higher than sand, so the silt percentage was 77.9% and the sand percentage was 22.1%, so we classify it as clay loam. Soil texture determines its properties. For example, sample 1, which is sandy clay, does not retain water well, while sample 2, which is clay loam, retains more water and nutrients. The results are consistent with soil texture databases and we found that the hydrometer method is an effective method for determining soil texture.
