1.1 Indian Contributions: Panini's Grammar

In ancient India, the study of language took on a highly systematic and analytical form, with the work of the renowned scholar Panini (circa 6th-4th century BCE) standing out as one of the earliest and most sophisticated grammatical frameworks. Pänini's Aşțādhyāyī, a comprehensive grammar of Sanskrit, remains a cornerstone of linguistic analysis even today. It meticulously described the structure of Sanskrit using precise rules for phonetics, morphology, and syntax.

Pänini's grammar differed from later Western grammatical traditions in that it was both descriptive and prescriptive, seeking to preserve the classical form of Sanskrit, a language considered sacred in the Vedic tradition. However, his rules were not rigid commandments for how the language should be spoken but rather detailed observations on how it was spoken by learned individuals. This unique approach anticipated many elements of modern linguistic theory, though traditional grammar in the West would develop along a different path.
