Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan was a visionary leader who believed
that “the grace of wealth, bestowed upon us by Allah (God),
must be spread to envelop our friends and brethren around
the world.” Leaders should learn from Zayed’s perspective of
how a leader should be to his people. They need to associate
themselves with such open-minded and open-hearted leaders
who wish no harm to any person within or outside of their
country.
Final Years
In 1999, while he was in a hospital for some tests, the people
of UAE wrote him a personal ‘thank you’ letter with 15 million
signatures. On November 2004, Zayed died, as announced
by Abu Dhabi TV. He was believed to be 86 years old. He
is buried in the courtyard of the new Sheikh Zayed Grand
Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
Zayed was extremely popular in his home country. He was
admired as a simple man who guarded his people’s culture
and traditions and presented a civilized image of the UAE
to the rest of the world; he was the undisputed father of his
nation. He was especially respected in the US and Europe due
to his pro-western stance and his reputation as moderate and
gentle.
