What Is Friction?
Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion or attempted motion between two surfaces in contact. When we throw a ball on the floor, ideally, it should keep rolling forever according to Newton’s first law. However, in reality, the ball stops after moving a certain distance. This stopping force is what we call friction.

Factors Affecting Friction:
Nature of the Surfaces in Contact:
Friction depends on the smoothness or roughness of the surfaces in contact.
Smooth surfaces experience less friction because there is minimal interlocking of irregularities.
Rough surfaces result in increased friction due to greater irregularities.
For example, snow-covered surfaces offer very little friction, while tires with high irregularity (grip) enhance friction for cyclists1.
Force Acting on the Surfaces:
Friction increases when a force is applied along with the surface irregularities.
The more force applied, the greater the friction.
Friction is directly proportional to the normal force (force perpendicular to the sliding direction).
The weight of an object contributes to the normal force, making friction directly proportional to the object’s weight2.
Design of Objects:
Friction exists not only between solid surfaces but also in liquids and gases.
Streamlined designs are chosen to reduce fluid friction (e.g., dolphins’ streamlined bodies in water).

Types of Friction:
Static Friction:
Acts between surfaces at rest with respect to each other.
For example, when you push a heavy box on the floor, static friction prevents it from moving until you apply enough force to overcome it.
Sliding Friction:
Occurs when two objects slide against each other.
Think of the resistance when dragging a heavy suitcase across the floor.
Rolling Friction:
Associated with rolling motion (e.g., wheels, tires).
Rolling friction is generally lower than sliding friction.
Cars on roads and bicycles utilize rolling friction.
Fluid Friction:
Acts in fluids (liquids or gases).
Air resistance (drag) when cycling or swimming is an example of fluid friction.

Friction ignites matchsticks when you strike them against a rough surface.
Pistons in Engines:
Friction plays a crucial role in the motion of pistons within cylinders in engines.

Friction between pens and boards or paper allows us to write.
Vehicle Traction and Braking:
Friction between tires and roads provides traction, allowing vehicles to grip the road.
