Within clade A, R. moulmainense Hook.f. is placed in the
monophyletic section Choniastrum Franch., which is sister
to a large clade containing the paraphyletic section Rho-
dodendron L. and nested sections Vireya Blume and Pog-
onathum G.Don. Due to paraphyly, the 15 Indian species
of section Rhododendron in this study are in two clades.
Ten species—R. baileyi Balf.f., R. anthopogon D.Don, R.
lepidotum Wall. ex. G.Don, R. ciliatum Hook.f., R. dalhous-
ieae Hook.f., R. nuttallii Booth ex Nutt, R. setosum D.Don,
R. edgeworthii Hook.f., R. xanthostephanum Merr, and R.
pendulum Hook.f. are placed in one clade (including section
Vireya) and five—R. campylogynum Franch., R. virgatum
Hook.f., R. maddenii Hook.f., R. triflorum Hook.f. and R.
cinnabarinum—in another clade (including section Pogon-
athum). Two species, R. vaccinoides Hook.f. and R. santa-
paui Sastry et al., are in the monophyletic section Vireya
Blume. Similarly, R. anthopogon D.Don. of the (unsup-
ported) section Pogonathum G.Don is nested within the
paraphyletic section Rhododendron. Two accessions each
of two species—R. triflorum and of R. ciliatum—group
together as each other’s closest relatives. In clade B, five
species—R. arboreum Sm., R. thomsonii Hook.f., R. cam-
panulatum D.Don, R. macabeanum Watt. ex Balf.f. and R.
hodgsonii Hook.f.—are placed in the monophyletic sec-
tion Ponticum G.Don. (the single section in subgenus Hyme-
nanthes), consistent with traditional classification.
