The resistance to wear or hardness is one of the important properties of road aggregates. The purpose of the Los Angeles test is to measure degradation of mineral aggregates of standard grading caused by group of action involving abrasion, attrition, impact and grinding in a rotating steel drum containing, a specified number of steel spheres, the number depending upon the grading of test sample. After the prescribed number of revolutions, the contents are removed from the drum and the aggregate portion is sieved to measure the degradation as percent loss. That means the aggregates should be hard enough to resist abrasion.
