Once in office, President Thomas Jefferson wanted to secure United States trading on the 
Mississippi River.This exploration led to 
the rapid migration of settlers to the Pacific Northwest.However, when 
slaves in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (later known as Haiti) revolted and Britain 
resumed its war with France, the French emperor surprised Jefferson by offering to sell not 
only New Orleans, but the entire Louisiana region.
