Social networking, while seemingly a recent phenomenon, has existed for over 150 years.  Before computers and the internet, people with shared interests formed in-person groups to connect, share experiences, and network professionally.  The fundamental aspect of social networking—connecting with like-minded individuals—remains consistent across time, only the method of connection has changed.
