Alex, angered by Nouf's indifference following a near-drowning incident, engages in a manipulative game of silent torment.  He escalates his actions, adding to her chores and causing minor incidents, but Nouf remains impassive.  He discovers her solace in a historical romance novel, steals it, and places it out of reach, enjoying her subsequent distress.  Eventually, he deliberately breaks her leg, feigning concern while reveling in her vulnerability and dependence.  He forces his attentions upon her, taking advantage of her weakened state and leaving her bruised and broken.  He carries her to his bedroom, and despite her pain and pleas, he proceeds to rape her, emphasizing his dominance and control, leaving her unconscious and vulnerable in his arms, intending to further control her. He later reflects on the event, believing that she is now utterly his, and intends to assert his control over her further.
