Over all summary of this poem : alienation was one of the most popular characteristics of the generation who had witnessed the twentieth century period or specifically the modernist literature period. The twentieth century period had witnessed world wars such as the world war one in which Keith Douglas was only 19 when he got involved in it and the second world war in which either he was noted for his participation in it's events such as The Second Battle of El Alamein which was the beginning of the end of the second world war .On 9 June Douglas's armoured unit was pinned down on high ground overlooking Tilly-sur-Seulles .The Poet paused at the previous line when he said that the monster often leaves him and at the second line of this sestet , he tells us that he believes that persuasive monster , and he actually tried to test if the monster's words about going are true and goes out quite sure that when he comes back he will find him gone as he said ,but No !Posted initially at Cairo and Palestine, he found himself stuck at headquarters twenty miles behind El Alamein as a camouflage officer as the Second Battle of El Alamein began. The Poet wasn't depraved just from the ability to speak but also to write what he wants as if the monster is continuing his acts of disabling the Poet and using him for his own favour. Then the Poet says that it gets absent for long periods, never expected when he returns and has several forms and disguises .The use of the pronounce 'He' in refering to the monster here and in the coming lines alters us about how the Poet sees his monster. It's creating an epitome of hell in the Poet to remind him of his authentic home ( The Hell) .The Poet here is mocking himself not just for believing that persuasive monster who is making fun of him , but also for hoping that the monster's words could have been true , even just for once he hoped that his monster would free him and go .In fragment B , the Poet introduces his monster as a jailor this time .The word ' jailor ' implicates the submission that the Poet as a prisoner feels towards his jailor. That jailor which was inside the belly and now is inside the poet's mind allows him out of the jail on conditions and brings him back by telepathy .He became like a marionette who is controlled by it's own owner and has nothing to do but to forcibly mimic or represent him .And since the Poet says that he writes what I write or edits it ( censors it ) , so we don't know who exactly those lines were written by .His trails have all failed Infront of that monster.
