One thing that really got me thinking in this lesson is how slavery affected people in ways that're not so easy to understand. At the same time, the lesson revealed how deeply immoral and inhuman slavery was--treating people as property, breaking families apart, and forcing mothers to risk everything for their children. What makes this meaningful to me is realizing that strength can come suddenly from love and fear, and that Stowe used shared human experiences, especially motherhood, to make slavery feel personal and real. What really surprised me is that there were slaves who looked white.
