The sisters hide the clothes again because they believe that Moriah will return in a good mood since she had the opportunity to bless Bartley; However, Moriah came back sadder than ever. She told her daughters that she had seen Michael on the gray pony; She couldn't bless Bartley because of the shock. To calm her down, Nora and Kathleen showed Moriah the clothes and told her that Michael had been given a clean burial. Moriah's lamentation is interrupted when the islanders bring Bartley's body to the hut and tell the women that the gray pony pushed Bartley into the sea, where he drowned.
Moriah kneels near Bartley's body and sprinkles holy water on him. She finally resigns herself to her fate as she claims that she will finally sleep at night because she no longer has anything to worry about: all the men in her family have died at sea. The white boards that were supposed to be used in Michael's coffin will now be used to bury Bartley. Moriah prays that the souls of her husband, father-in-law, and four children may rest in peace, so she closes the curtains.
