Three types of hearing loss are:




  1. Conductive Hearing Loss:

    • Hindrance of vibrations passing from the outer ear to the inner ear, particularly the cochlea.

    • Causes include earwax buildup, glue ear, ear infection with inflammation and fluid buildup, perforated eardrum, or ossicles malfunction.

    • Scar tissue from ear infections can damage the ear drum, and ossicles may be impaired due to infection, trauma, or fusion.




  2. Sensorineural Hearing Loss:

    • Caused by dysfunction in the inner ear, cochlea, auditory nerve, or brain damage.

    • Often results from damage to cochlear hair cells, with aging and prolonged exposure to loud noises as common factors.

    • Research is investigating the use of stem cells to grow new hair cells.

    • Sensorineural total deafness may result from birth defects, inner ear infections, or head trauma.

    • Cochlear implants can help if the ear drum and middle ear are functioning properly.




  3. Mixed Hearing Loss:

    • Combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

    • Prolonged ear infections can damage both the ear drum and ossicles.

    • Surgical intervention may restore hearing, but success is not guaranteed.
