- wishes if you bring back my ball."The frog kept shouting but the Princess did not look back.In the evening as the Princess sat down for dinner with the King and her sisters, she heard a soft knock at the door followed by a croaking noise.She arose and went to open the door herself."Go away, you ugly creature, why have you come here," said the Princess rudely to the frog as she pushed him aside from the door.- Suddenly there was another knock on the door followed by the croaking.She knew that she could not reach the ball.

Sometimes on warm and sunny days, the King's youngest daughter went to play near a well in the forest. The Princess was very fond of a golden ball She always kept it with her, even when she went out of the palace. One day, the Princess was playing with her ball near the well. She kept tossing it high up in the air and catching it again. Suddenly she missed, and the ball rolled on the ground and went into the well. The Prin cess ran to the side of the well and peeped inside it. The well was very deep. She knew that she could not reach the ball. She felt very to cry. sad and began "Why are you crying, dear Princess," said someone. She looked up but didn't see anyone around. "May I be of any help, Princess?" she heard the same croaking voice again.She looked around again and saw a frog sitting on a rock near the well. She was surprised to hear a frog speak in a human voice. "I have lost my favourite ball. It fell in to the well and now I may never find it," said the Princess."I can help you, but what will you give me if I bring your play thing back?" asked the frog. The Princess became excited. "Whatever you want, dear frog," said she, "My clothes, my pearls and jewels, you can choose whatever you like." "No, I do not want your riches," said the frog. "But if you promise to let me be your companion and sit by you at your little table, I will go down and bring back your golden ball. She was surprised as well as afraid. She had not imagined that the frog could come to the Palace on his own. She pretended as if she had not heard

- "Open the door. See who has come so late in the evening," ordered the King.
- The Princess was terrified. She did not want
- her family to know about the promise she had made. She arose and went to open the door herself. "Go away, you ugly creature, why have you come here," said the Princess rudely to the frog as she pushed him aside from the door.
- Everyone noticed that the Princess was very upset. The King gently called her to his side and asked, "Why do you look so worried and frightened? What is the matter, dear?"
- "Oh! Nothing father," lied the Princess.
- Suddenly there was another knock on the door followed by the croaking. The Princess could not hide her secret any longer. She began to cry and soon told her father about what had happened.
