The use of radar has become increasingly popular in various fields of study. From self-driving cars to exploration devices, radars have become the “eyes” of electronic devices. At the same time, these devices can also be used to assist people in their daily tasks such as making measurements, tracing the path of an object, medical assistance and others. One of the reasons why these devices have become so readily available is their low price, small size and versatility.
Ultrasonic radars can accomplish distance measurements by measuring the time delay between emission of the ultrasonic signal and receipt of the echo signal. Microcontrollers can be connected to perform computations or control timers in these devices. The detection of distance between moving objects poses a challenge on the temporal resolution of the detector. The correct delay time is essential in making the device functional to the target user. The radar can be tested for functionality after signal detection is accomplished by setting up the sensor circuit and algorithms. The correct calibration of these radars is imperative given the fact that the safety of the user depends on the sensor system.
The goal this project is to make a visual aid for people whose sense of sight has
been compromised. This goal can be accomplished by interfacing a distance sensor to a speech generation module. The module will convert the distance data into an audible speech signal that can be used by the vision-impaired user to navigate through spaces while avoiding obstacles. While lidar devices are currently used for similar applications in self-driving cars, the unavailability and high cost of these sensors make them difficult to include in other applications. This device has been tested for distance measurement accuracy as well as compensating for the movement of the user.
