In this comedy, Goldsmith ridicules the sentimental comedy in vogue at the time. Young Marlow, a bashful man except with servant girls and barmaids, sets out with his friend Hastings to travel to his fiancée, Miss Kate Hardcastle. They come to an inn where they stop to enquire the way to the Hardcastle home. There they meet Miss Hardcastle's half-brother, Tony Lumpkin, a mischievous, cunning and ignorant man who directs them to an inn where they can spend the night which is in reality the house of the Hardcastles. Marlow and Hastings arrive there and confusion arises over mistaken identities: they take Mr. Hardscastle as the landlord of the inn and Miss Hardcastle as one of the servants to whom Marlow makes violent love. The arrival of Sir Charles Marlow clears up the misunderstanding and all ends well with Hastings falling in love with Miss Constance Neville, Miss Hardcastle's friend whom Mrs. Hardcastle wants as wife for her son, Tony. Although the plot is shallow, the play redeems itself in the ease of the unfolding of the comic life it portrays. The characters are without depth but imbued with a humor of their own
