The play revolves around Laura, Tom's sister, and Amanda's daughter. Laura is a delicate and fragile person, both physically and emotionally. She is very shy and has a limp due to a childhood illness. She has a collection of miniature glass animals that she polishes and rearranges with great care. Laura is as delicate and beautiful as her collection, and she often retreats to her own fantasy world to escape the pressures of daily life. She visits parks, zoos and greenhouses and indulges in music and her glass collection to calm her anxiety. Laura's nickname, "Blue Roses," comes from Jim's mishearing of "pleurisies," the disease that left her disabled. Tom and Jim both find Laura as rare and exotic as a blue rose, delicate yet beautiful. Laura accepts her limitations and does not pretend to be someone else. She does not fantasise about her schoolgirl crush on Jim and instead presents the memory as a beautiful but immobile creature like her glass figurines. Laura may be the strongest character in the play despite being symbolically linked with the fragile glass and exotic Blue Roses. She serves as a peacemaker between Tom and Amanda and helps to mend the wounds between them. Tom, at the end of the play, realises that he cannot abandon Laura, whom he cares for deeply. When Tom
escapes at the end of the play, he realises that as far as he goes, he can never abandon Laura: “Oh, Laura, Laura,” Tom exclaims, “I tried to leave you behind me, but I am more faithful than I intended to be!”
