It was an opportunity for Oman to promote its tourism on a grand scale. 43 out of 45 Asian countries participated in the events. North Korea and Macau were the only countries which didn't participate.
Oman finished third in the medal tally behind Thailand and China. There were many beach sporting activities in which the participating nations competed. Competitions were held in fourteen different sporting events. This was the first International event of this scale in Oman.
Oman has a long coast line of two thousand and ninety two kilometres in length.
