Leveling is an art of determining the relative heights or elevations of points or objects on the
earth’s surface. It deals with measurements in a vertical plane. It is a branch of surveying in
which surveyor determines the elevation of points and objects with respect to given or assumed
datum. Leveling is the measurement of geodetic height using an optical leveling instrument and
a level staff or rod having a numbered scale. Common leveling instruments include the spirit
level, dumpy level, digital level, and laser level.
These days surveyors are using digital levels in the field. Digital levels use a special rod scale
which is scanned by the instrument to determine the height. These instruments are having data
recording capability. The automation removes the requirement for the operator to read a scale
and so reduces errors. It will also compute refraction and curvature corrections
