The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a network of physical objects that are connected to the internet and share data and information among themselves without human intervention. In practice, IoT encompasses a wide variety of objects such as smart devices, sensors, machines, vehicles, etc., that can communicate and share data automatically.

IoT is implemented through automation using what is known as "The Three Layer Assembly":

The Physical Layer: This includes the physical hardware such as sensors, electronic circuits, and small computers based on technologies like GPS. This hardware forms the foundation for connecting the objects to the internet.

The Logical Layer: Its purpose is to ensure that objects can communicate and share information efficiently and securely. This is where the required software for managing operations, communication, and data analysis gathered by the physical objects is concentrated.

The Near-Cloud Layer: Assists in transferring data from physical objects to the internet cloud. With the help of the near-cloud, data can be processed, stored, and analyzed efficiently.

Through all three layers, IoT enables smooth and efficient operation of physical objects in various environments, while managing and analyzing real-time data. In this passage, the scenario describes a situation where there's a code running on an edge device that detects an abnormal temperature rise in a machine's component. The question arises: How does this edge device communicate this information to the cloud for further processing and analysis?

The solution involves utilizing Bluetooth communication to relay the data from the edge device to a gateway or concentrator, which then transfers the data to the cloud. This allows for the integration of the edge device's data with other systems and applications in the cloud environment. Once in the cloud, sophisticated data processing and analysis can take place using various tools and platforms such as data lakes, full-stack IoT platforms, or cloud services like AWS.

The passage emphasizes the shift towards cloud-based architectures compared to traditional local computing setups, highlighting the scalability and flexibility that cloud platforms offer for managing and analyzing large volumes of data from edge devices.
