Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The virus belongs to the family Coronaviridae, which includes viruses that cause respiratory illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus with a genome consisting of about 30,000 nucleotides.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. The virus belongs to the family Coronaviridae, which includes viruses that cause respiratory illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases like Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

SARS-CoV-2 is a single-stranded RNA virus with a genome consisting of about 30,000 nucleotides. It is characterized by its distinctive spike proteins protruding from its surface, giving it a crown-like appearance, hence the name “coronavirus.”

The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. Symptoms of COVID-19 vary widely, ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multi-organ failure, and death. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, and muscle aches.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching consequences worldwide, affecting public health, economies, and daily life. Efforts to control the spread of the virus have included measures such as social distancing, mask-wearing, quarantine, testing, contact tracing, and vaccination campaigns.

Research efforts have focused on understanding the virus’s biology, developing diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines, and monitoring its genetic mutations and variants to inform public health strategies. Despite vaccination efforts and public health interventions, the pandemic continues to pose significant challenges globally.
