Smart cities, characterized by their compact design and technological integration, are transforming urban landscapes. These cities utilize advanced infrastructure, including sensors, cloud computing, and wireless networks, to monitor and manage their physical environment. Citizen participation through smartphones contributes to the city's knowledge base. While technology plays a crucial role, the broader concept of intelligent city design emphasizes human well-being, focusing on areas like smart economy, transportation, environment, living, and government. Ultimately, the goal of these smart initiatives is to enhance competitiveness in the global business arena.

"Smart cities" in the world today tend to be more compact (arranged economically in less space) than 20th century urban areas. The first and most common definition of a "smart city" has to do with technology, especially in urban infrastructure (basic organization of resources, sites, and transportation among them). There are three elements of infrastructure: sensors that monitor movement, sound, and other features of the physical environment; the "computing cloud" in cyberspace that organizes the information; and the change that happens because of it. Many such areas have wireless computer networks. Often, occupants contribute knowledge to its organization, too, probably through their smartphones (the computers they carry around with them). A more general phrase, intelligent city design, may include "smart technology," but its focus is on people; it includes a smart economy, smart transportation, a smart environment, smart living, and smart government. Most likely, the purpose of all this structure is to compete more successfully in the business world.
