• After the defeat of the Hundred Years' War against France in 1453, most of the prominent sixty noble families in England were discontent with the king Henry VI because of his mental problems and weak rule. As a result, an alternative claim to the throne by the duke of York interested the nobles which divided the nobility between those who remained loyal to Henry VI, the “Lancastrians,” and those who supported the duke of York, the “Yorkists”. By the way, the name of the 22 years of struggle between the two parties comes from the novel of Anne of Geierstein by Walter Scott in which it is referred as Wars of the Roses because York's symbol was a white rose, and Lancaster's a red one.
