A microgrid often can function in two ways; connected to the main grid or operating independently (islanded). It meets energy needs when connected to the grid by using generation, storage systems, and the main grid. Any excess energy generated or stored can be sent back to the grid. Typically, microgrids use renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines to meet energy requirements. Extra energy can be stored locally and shared with the main grid while any shortfall in energy is supplemented by tapping into local storage or the main grid.
Microgrids come with storage options including battery storage, compressed air storage, hydrogen electrolyzers, and fuel cells with Li-ion batteries being a popular choice due to their efficiency.
In case of disruptions, in the grid, the microgrid can switch to islanded mode and operate independently using local resources and stored power. These systems are designed to provide power for several days and can prioritize critical loads by cutting off power to non-essential areas if needed. This adaptability ensures a power supply even during grid failures.
