The art of war is an ancient Chinese military thesis dating back to late spring and autumn period (approximately 5th century BC). The work, attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu ("The Lord of the Sun"), as Sunzi spelled it), consists of 13 chapters. Each is devoted to one aspect of the war and how it is applied to military strategy and tactics. For nearly 1,500 years the main text in the anthology was that seven military classics will be formalized by Emperor Shinzo of Song in 1080. The art of war remains the most influential strategic text of the East Asian war and has influenced both Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy, lifestyles and beyond.
The book included a detailed explanation and analysis of the Chinese army, from weapons and strategy to rank and discipline. Sun also stressed the importance of intelligence and espionage agents for the war effort. Because Sun has long been regarded as one of the best military tacticians and analysts in history, his teachings and strategies have formed the basis of advanced military training for centuries to come.
The book was translated into French and published in 1772 (republished in 1782) by the French Jesuit Jean-Joseph Marie Amiot. British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop attempted a partial translation into English in 1905 under the title The Book of War. The first annotated English translation published by Lionel Giles was completed in 1910. Military and political leaders such as Mao Zedong, Japanese Daimio Takeda Schengen, Vietnamese General Phu Nguyen Jiap and U.S. Military General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. drew from the book.
