My graduation project focused on designing and analyzing geothermal HVAC systems for both residential and agricultural spaces, aiming to maximize energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. I explored both low and high-temperature geothermal systems, recognizing their versatility for various applications, including power generation, snow melting, and hot water supply.

The design process involved studying optimized heat pumps for efficient heat transfer between ground surfaces, analyzing various ground source systems for efficient heat exchange with the earth, and comparing different loop designs (vertical, horizontal, and slinky) for optimal performance.

One of the biggest challenges was accurately calculating the system's coefficient of performance (COP) and sizing geothermal HVAC components, requiring extensive use of thermodynamic principles and software like MATLAB. This project provided a deep understanding of sustainable energy systems, particularly geothermal energy, and strengthened my skills in problem-solving, system design, and applied engineering.

The primary goal was to create a system that maximizes energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
In this project, I delved into both low-temperature and high-temperature geothermal systems, understanding their applications in different environments. I explored how these systems could be applied not only for power generation but also for utility purposes like snow melting and hot water supply, making them versatile across various needs.
The design process involved several key components:
Heat Pumps: I studied how heat pumps could be optimized for forcing heat transfer between ground surfaces, which is crucial for both heating in winter and cooling in summer.
Ground Source Systems: I examined how these systems could efficiently transfer heat to and from the earth, ensuring consistent temperature control.
Loop Systems: I analyzed different loop designs, including vertical, horizontal, and slinky loops, determining which would be most effective under various conditions.
One of the most challenging aspects was ensuring the correct calculation of the system's coefficient of performance (COP) and sizing the geothermal HVAC components accurately. This required extensive use of thermodynamic principles and software tools like MATLAB to model heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
Overall, my project provided me with a deep understanding of sustainable energy systems, particularly how geothermal energy can be harnessed efficiently. It also strengthened my skills in problem-solving, system design, and applied engineering, all of which I am eager to bring into a professional setting.
