Othello is the hero of the play that carries his name as
its title. He is a black African living in the Italian city-state of
Venice. He is a distinguished general. The battlefield proves
his intelligence, courage and leadership skills. He enjoys the
trust and respect of the troops he leads. His exceptional
abilities qualify him for leading the Venetian army sent to
defend the colony of Cyprus against Turkish invasion.
Othello's black skin is a major factor in his life. It defines
his experience of social life. He feels that he is an outsider in a
society that considers him different. Although he is important
to them, he is never considered one of them. They refer to him
as an African and attribute to him the derogatory epithets
which the name recalls. They tend to distance themselves from
the black other, who is associated in their imagination with
inferiority, immorality and evil.
Othello is an unwise lover. Desdemona loves him deeply
and sacrifices much for his sake. She is the angel that gives him
peace, happiness and belonging in a world which is not his
own. Her sacrifice should have created within him an
unshakable belief in her fidelity. But his gullibility undermines
his great prospect of happy love and marriage. He allows Iago
to fuel his jealousy until he unjustifiably kills his angelic wife.
As he describes himself, he is a man who loved truly but
unwisely.
