Instead, the rich characters showed their negative qualities on display:

The novel also suggested that wealth was not equivalent to social class.
Tom Buchanan came from the wealthy elite, while Jay Gatsby was a self-made
millionaire. Gatsby, self-conscious about his "new money" social status, threw
unbelievably lavish parties in hopes of catching Daisy Buchanan's attention.
However, at the novel's conclusion, Daisy chose to stay with Tom despite the
fact that she genuinely loved Gatsby; her reasoning was that she could not bear
to lose the social status that her marriage to Tom afforded her. With this
conclusion, Fitzgerald suggested that wealth alone did not guarantee entrance
into the upper classes of elite society.
