Utilitarianism holds that we should act in such a way that we produce the greatest balance of good/bad consequences (or utility) for all people in the long run (Mill 1979). There are two main types of utilitarianism, act-utilitarianism, which holds that individual actions should maximize utility, and rule- utilitarianism, which holds that actions should be based on a system of rules that maximize utility. According to popular caricatures of utilitarianism, this view implies that the ends justify the means and that the good of the many outweighs the good of the few. However, sophisticated versions of this theory can eschew or buffer these implications (Pojman 1995)
