Prehistoric Times: Shelter as Basic Human Necessity

A After food and clothing necessary for survival, the most important basic need is shelter.Throughout human history, people have needed protection from "the elements" (wind, rain, storms, cold, sun). Before they discovered how to build structures, human beings found shelter in trees, which provided protection from extreme weather, insects, wild animals, and other dangers. The earliest people began to "feel at home" in caves.

A After food and clothing necessary for survival, the most important basic need is shelter. Throughout human history, people have needed protection from "the elements" (wind, rain, storms, cold, sun). Before they discovered how to build structures, human beings found shelter in trees, which provided protection from extreme weather, insects, wild animals, and other dangers. The earliest people began to "feel at home" in caves. In the Stone Age, a prehistoric period of about two million years, human builders arranged branches on top of one another to make themselves places to live. With stone tools, prehistoric builders created tents out of animal skins, or they put big stones together to build shelters. Later generations created homes from the earth itself; they formed bricks out of clay and dried them in the sun. The first roofs (building coverings) were of earth and plants. Everywhere in the world where there were human beings, necessity led to invention.
