There are several methods that can be used to question the selected customer segment. One method is face-to-face surveys. To locate customers, a market research interviewer goes to a place where they will encounter many members of the target demographic. In the example above, a university campus would be an ideal location. Using samples of the new product, an in-person survey can produce a great deal of data and high response rates. Another method used to do market research is a focus group. A focus group is a group of people from the target demographic who are gathered together to discuss the new product. The discussion is usually led by a focus group moderator, who tries not to influence the discussion, and is recorded. Finally, a method that has been used since the beginning of market research is simple observation. This method is as simple as it sounds. Researchers watch their potential customers. A researcher counts the number of female students visiting a particular store, for example. However, observational techniques can also be done digitally. The use of computer cookies or even store loyalty cards can be a source of data for market researchers. Whatever the method, market research helps companies design products that should be successful.
