Titre Alcalimétrique Total (TA) : Le TA correspond à la concentration en ions hydroxydes (OH⁻) présents dans un échantillon d'eau. Il indique la quantité d'ions basiques forts capables de neutraliser les acides ajoutés. On détermine le TA en titrant l'eau avec un acide jusqu'à ce que l'indicateur de phénolphtaléine change de couleur (point de neutralisation des hydroxydes). Le TA reflète donc la basicité initiale de l’eau.
Titre Alcalimétrique Complet (TAC) : Le TAC mesure la capacité tampon de l'eau, c'est-à-dire sa capacité totale à neutraliser les acides. Il inclut non seulement les ions hydroxydes (OH⁻) mais aussi les ions bicarbonates (HCO₃⁻) et carbonates (CO₃²⁻) présents dans l'échantillon. Le TAC est déterminé en continuant le titrage au-delà du point de neutralisation du TA jusqu'à ce que l'indicateur change pour un point final au vert de bromocrésol. Le TAC représente donc l’alcalinité totale de l’échantillon.
