One mirror made you look long and thin , and another mirror made you look short and fat . We were laughing at ourselves in the mirrors when the shopman appeared . behind the counter - a strange , dark man with one ear larger We hadn't noticed him come in . But suddenly there he wa than the other . ' How can I help you ? " he said , spreading his long , magic fingers on the counter . ' I want to buy my little boy a few simple tricks , ' I said . ' Um ! " said the shopman . He paused for a moment as if he was thinking , Then suddenly he took a glass ball from his head . ' Something like this ? " he said , holding it out . A child voice cried out angrily , ' I WANT to go in there , Daddy I WANT to go in there ! " Then a man said in a tired voice , The door's locked , Edward . But it isn't locked , ' I said in surprise ' It is , sir , ' said the shopman , ' always for that sort of child . ' As he spoke , we saw the child's face at the window . It was pale from eating too many sweets . I moved to the door to open it . ' It's no good , sir , ' said the shopman . ' It's in your pocket , ' said the shopman . He leaned over the counter and took a box out of Gip's pocket . ' And you wanted a Disappearing Egg too . ' He took an egg out of my coat pocket . He packed it up in a box and handed it to Gip Suddenly , I felt something moving about in my hat . I took my hat off quickly . A pigeon dropped out and ran on the counter
