The old city of Muscat is located in a small bay surrounded by volcanic mountains. In 1508, the Portuguese took control of Muscat and the surrounding coast and established Hasanini, its commercial center and naval base, until it was expelled from it in 1650. Muscat's original walls and some of its gates can still be seen, and the low-slung white buildings are a model for architecture in Muscat.
