The study deals with one of the important topics in semantics, which is minor derivation, represented here by the justification of naming.Among the most prominent ancient linguists who studied it was Ibn Sidah (d. 458 AH) in his dictionary Al-Muhkam and Al-Muhit Al-A'zam.I noticed that he returns some justifications for naming in his dictionary, so I wanted to do a study that sheds light on those justifications.This involves searching for the reason for naming things, meaning returning them to the origin from which they came.Linguists, both ancient and modern, have been concerned with studying the justification of naming.Th- Consideration of the core root of the word whose name is being explained.

Linguists, both ancient and modern, have been concerned with studying the justification of naming. Among the most prominent ancient linguists who studied it was Ibn Sidah (d. 458 AH) in his dictionary Al-Muhkam and Al-Muhit Al-A'zam. I noticed that he returns some justifications for naming in his dictionary, so I wanted to do a study that sheds light on those justifications. To see the validity of Ibn Sidah's approach to it, the research came under the title:
"The justifications for naming that Ibn Sidah (d. 458 AH) refuted in his Muhkam
A descriptive analytical study"
The nature of the study required that the research come in general in an introduction, a preface, and three sections: The first: What Ibn Sidah refuted of the justifications for naming in relation to the thing itself, the second: What Ibn Sidah refuted of the justifications for naming in relation to the thing with something else,
The third: What Ibn Sidah refuted of the justifications for naming in relation to morphological forms, then after the three sections comes the conclusion of the research, and among its most important results is that Ibn Sidah and his Muhkam have a firm foothold in linguistic study in general, and semantic study in particular, including: The establishment of the justification for naming names; Contrary to Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi's denial of them, among other points: Ibn Sidah's rejection of the explanations for the naming of some names does not mean the absolute rejection of the explanation; rather, it may be valid. Furthermore, I agree with Ibn Sidah to some extent regarding the explanations he rejected for the naming of things, but I disagree with him on most of them. Also, the criteria Ibn Sidah established for rejecting the explanation for naming certain names, which are generally represented by the criteria of contradiction with reality, the correct derivation of the name, and transmission from a reliable source.
Furthermore, linguistic criticism enriches linguistic studies and is evidence of the soundness of the Arab mind and the depth of its analysis. Finally, I believe that the guidelines that should be observed in studying the reasons for naming, both in terms of acceptance and rejection, can be summarized as follows: a) Considering the perspective of the person naming at the time of naming.
b) Taking into account that more than one explanation may be involved in naming a name, such as the explanation that the word 'ayranah' (meaning a lively and strong she-camel) is derived from the lion in terms of liveliness and from the wild donkey in terms of strength. T- Verification when quoting linguists, and consulting their works, so as not to attribute to them what is not theirs, as Ibn Sidah attributed to Ibn Duraid the derivation of the word "bardhun" (mule) from "bardhan al-rajul" (the man became heavy), which was not proven to be from him.
Th- Consideration of the core root of the word whose name is being explained.
J- Making the earlier existence the basis for explaining the name of what follows it, such as making "bardhun" the root for deriving "bardhan al-rajul" (the man became heavy), considering the preparation of the universe, heavens, earth, and creatures, including the mule, to receive humankind.
Then, after the conclusion, comes the index of sources and references and the subject index.
