4.2.The final strength of mixture overpasses

4.2.1. Initial strength
Initial strength values of different cold patch materials with

the initial stage in the patching process, as the cold patch
asphalt mixture is rolled, the aggregate is squeezed closer and
a new skeleton forms, at this time, the strength of the compacted
structure is mainly attributed to the inner friction resistance
rather than inner cohesion because the curing reaction has
not completely progressed and asphalt viscosity is low. Though
the initial strength of cold patch asphalt mixture is low, it could
meet basically the requirements of opening traffic according to
the specification JTG F40-2004.
With the increase of WER content, the initial strength
grows. It is because that the addition of WER brings about
the increase of viscosity of cold patch asphalt liquid, which provides
the good bonding force between aggregate particles, and
thus the initial strength is improved. In addition, the cold
patch asphalt mixture modified with WER combination ②EP-
20 + HGA shows higher initial strength growth than combination
①EP-20 + HGC, which means that the component combination
② is more favourable to open traffic (JTG F40 2004).
4.2.2. Final strength
According to the procedure of final strength test, results are
obtained as shown in Figure 6. It indicates that WER can significantly
enhance the final strength of the cold patch asphalt
mixture, and the strength grows rapidly with the increase of
WER content. The final strength of mixture overpasses
8.0 kN when the content amount to 1.2%, which can meet
the strength requirements of hot-mix asphalt mixture. The
reason is that, at this moment, through the compaction and
curing in the oven, the solvent evaporates
